Welcome to the Friday retailer flex a weekly pointed digest of inspirational and actionable insights you can implement today. This is NBDA President Heather Mason. This Friday’s flex is about investing in yourself and your bicycle, retail store or career, you’ve likely invested a lot into your business or job time, energy, money, maybe even your mental and physical health. Success doesn’t usually come without hard work and some sacrifice. Investing in your business or career is important. But so is investing in yourself. And today is about what it means to invest in yourself, why you want to do it and some ideas on how to get started. Let’s jump in. Let’s start with what it means to invest in yourself and why it’s important. In short, investing in yourself as doing anything to contribute to your long term well being. Usually this doesn’t mean investing money, or focusing on material things. Instead, it’s focusing on benefits such as health, knowledge, stress, relief, and happiness. This could encompass a range of tasks, including dedicating yourself to a workout schedule, learning new skills, and taking time off to relax. investing in yourself includes refining your current skill set to better support your bicycle store, investing time and education, peer to peer learning books, and furthering career enhancement tools. One major benefit investing in yourself is to prevent burnout. The stress of running your bicycle store or managing a busy one is significant. And it’s not unusual for it to develop into burnout symptoms like a lack of passion, poor physical and mental health. When you invest in becoming healthier, more knowledgeable, and more well rounded, your business and career would benefit to adding to your skill set and expanding your outlook can help you see areas where your bicycle store can expand and improve and allows you to put more energy into your work. So how do we start investing in ourselves? trying to accomplish a broad abstract goal like being healthier or reducing stress can be difficult. it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. Given this, we’ve boiled it down to five tips to help you start investing in yourself that you can try and build upon later. We want to start with a suggestion to read a book. Since this podcast is dedicated to the bicycle industry. I’m going to call out one of my personal favorite books. It’s titled leading out retail by Donnie Perry. leading out retail presents an analysis of the business of bicycle retail examining the groundwork of a successful employee training program, scheduling, pricing, and then veering into the higher concept business practices like social marketing for industry professionals turning to this book for guidance. Each chapter includes an end summary and checklists to ensure that no concept is glossed over. In this book, Donnie Perry built a case for how to run a great bike shop. Using his original research and quotes from other well established experts. He suggests a coherent vision for how to price schedule, train staff and market a store that can be successful today. And for years to come. Despite the amount of information presented in this book, and never becomes dull, it’s a must read. It allows you to take an in depth look at how to run and how to sustain your bicycle business. The next tip we have to start investing in yourself is to consider to take an online class to learn or improve a skill set. You can find classes in almost anything these days, anywhere. There’s colleges, universities, community centers, they’re offering adult ed classes such as accounting, business marketing, you can take a class in subjects like foreign language or web design, and learning these skills can even make you more adaptable to broaden your customer or client base because you’re going to be unable to appeal to a wider range of people. There’s also nothing wrong with taking a class in something you already know. Because chances are there’s been new skills or techniques developed since you learned this last. The third tip is to engage with others within our industry. Finding ways to network with others tackling similar issues is one of the best ways to move your business forward to make positive relationships and take Little stress off. Within the MBA we have multiple ways for members to connect via forums or virtual networking events. Having a place to link up with members of your industry is critical to investing in yourself and your business. The fourth tip is to take care of your body. If you don’t prioritize taking care of your body, unhealthy habits could catch up with you. poor diet and exercise can lead to a whole host of physical and mental health problems, which includes a lack of energy that could make it impossible to run your business. It’s so important to designate time for exercise, make time for the daily bike ride, you will find it not only elevates your mood, but makes interactions with your employees and customers more joyful. And the last tip we have is to take care of your mind. Your responsibilities are likely difficult enough without managing additional obstacles, anxiety, depression, all these leads to a lack of energy and motivation. Of course, either of these could also greatly hinder your ability to run your bicycle store. A tip here is meditation. Setting aside some time to meditate is a solid investment in your mental health. And there’s many apps these days that make it super easy. Another way to care for your mind is through friendship and conversation, which can be found through networking with industry peers, it helps to know you’re not alone. All right, it may feel impossible to take time away from the bicycle retail store to invest in yourself. But an investment in yourself is also for your business and career. Making space for your own growth can help prevent burnout and bring new skills and ideas to your store. If you’re ready to invest in yourself, but don’t know where to start, here are a few ideas. Read almost any book. We suggested leading out retail by Donnie Perry. Take a class to learn a new skill or improve an old one. Engage with others within your industry. Make time for the ride take care of your body. And finally, take care of your mind.
