Peter Henry – Board Chair
Landry’s Bicycles – Massachusetts (7 locations)

Peter used a bike as his primary transportation in elementary school, high school and college; upon graduation in 1974 he decided that he wanted to become a bike mechanic and help people enjoy riding bikes. He worked one year for Leon Landry (in business since 1922), and, with help from his father, bought Landry’s, then a small shop, in 1975. Along with partners and employees, he grew the shop to become one of the largest independent bike retailers in the country.

Peter joined the Board of the NBDA in fall of 2017 and believes that the mission of the NBDA is to call retailers to excellence, and to guide them along the way. As Board Chair, Peter believes that his main function is not to advance his own ideas, but instead assure that all Board members’ opinions and perspectives are heard and considered to ensure that the Association meets the needs of the widest range of bike shops.

Andrew Feenstra Andrew Feenstra – Vice Chair
Cyclesmith – Halifax NS

As a child of Dutch immigrants to Canada, cycling was in Andrew’s blood.  His love for the bicycle began at an early age as he chased his older sisters on their hand-me-down bikes around the neighbourhood. Andrew started in the bike industry in 1986 working at a small bicycle repair shop as a technician, and turned through thousands of repairs each summer.  In 1994 he started working at Cyclesmith during his university days, after 4 years at Cyclesmith he left the bike industry to get a “real job”, for nine months he missed the industry, and in 1999 came back into the bike industry as co-owner of Cyclesmith.  In 2016 he bought out his two business partners, and has since created an amazing team of passionate bicycle retail professionals.  He works with many organizations to help his local community become better including charity rides, hospital foundations, immigration services, and kids advocacy programs.  Andrew is a founding member of the NBDA P2C Group (could be P2″eh” – but “C” is for Canada).

Andrew’s goal is to make bicycle retail a true profession where everyone is proud to be working in the industry, make a living wage, and work at something they are passionate about, so we don’t lose great people in their pursuit to find a “real job”.

Gillian Forsyth Gillian Forsyth – Treasurer
BFF Bikes – Chicago, IL

Prior to purchasing BFF BIKES (est 2013) in 2020 Gillian’s career was spent behind a desk as a financial accountant.  After leaving the corporate world Gillian never looked back.  As the owner of BFF BIKES Gillian likes to focus on education and helping new cyclists get started.  At the age of 30 Gillian was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and found cycling to be a great escape from the day-to-day stresses of the disease.  As such, fundraising and charity is near and dear to Gillian’s heart and with an athlete coaching background she uses the shop to raise money and volunteers her coaching efforts to many different organizations.  In her “spare” time you will find her gravelling it up with her friends or training for ironman triathlons.

Jake CapistrantJake Capistrant – Secretary
Jake’s Bikes – Alexandria, MN

My passion for cycling began when I was 13 and started working after school at our local bike shop.  At that time, I was also fundraising and riding for the MS Ride Across Minnesota.  After eight years I moved to the Twin Cities and for three years worked at Penn Cycle, one of the largest bike dealers in the country.  I returned to Alexandria to manage the shop there.  When my boss left the bike industry, I knew it was the right time to follow my dream of owning my own shop.  This has resulted in the significant growth of the area’s cycling community.  We have built over 15 miles of mountain bike trails in two county parks, started a NICA team involving 40 youth and 11 adult coaches. There are now three bike clubs.  Jake’s Bikes helps sponsor races, group rides, rodeos and at Christmas rejuvenates used bikes for a local charity.  I continue to fundraise and ride to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  My wife Tracy and our two children are also actively involved in these efforts.

John RobinsonJohn Robinson
Johnny Velo Bikes – Columbus, Ohio

John Robinson opened Johnny Velo Bikes in 2018 after leaving his corporate banking career and following his passion. Cycling has been integral to John’s life since he and his father used to ride to the library in the small Ohio town where he grew up. As a two-time cancer survivor, John captains a team for Pelotonia, central Ohio’s cancer fundraising ride that attracts 8,000+ riders in a single weekend, and considers community service and charity work among his top priorities as a small business owner. He’s also an advocate for cycling infrastructure and policy in Columbus and was part of an effort to create safe bikeways in the community the shop serves.

After just one year in business, John was awarded Businessperson of the Year by the Clintonville Chamber of Commerce, was proud to earn the NBDA’s America’s Best Bike Shop distinction, and is consistently among the top reviewed shops in Columbus.

Tim Krone

Tim Krone
Pedal – Kalamazoo, MI

In less than a decade, Tim’s shop, Pedal, has gone from a start-up shop with small brands to a couple of larger shops with big brands. Along the way, the NBDA has been a constant companion — from the financial data he used to validate his business plan to the P2 program, of which he’s been a member for several years. Tim thinks that bicycle specialty retail deserves and needs an industry voice and is happy to be supporting the NBDA.

Joe Du BoisJoseph Du Bois
Trek Bicycle Stores – South West and South East Florida

Once upon a time, a young punk, who was directionless in life, got into mountain biking in the early ’90s. A bike shop opened near his home through a chance of fate, where he was offered a job. Within months of working in bicycle retail, Joe knew he had found his home. Fast forward almost 30-years, Joe, alongside his wife and business partner, have grown their bicycle retail operation into one of the largest independently owned bicycle retail companies in the country. Joe always had a goal of making a positive impact on bicycle retail. By joining the NBDA, he feels that this platform will allow him to give back and help other business owners grow their business, which in return will not only elevate their personal lives but their teammate’s lives as well. Not too shabby for a kid who barely made it out of high-school!
