The Bike Gallery Celebrates 50 Years

No one embodies the rich history of Charlotte’s bike market quite like Alirio “Al” Lizarazo, a visionary whose journey from Colombia to the Queen City in 1962 would forever shape the landscape of cycling in our beloved region. In 1970, Al Lizarazo’s odyssey took a pivotal turn when he joined a local hardware store that not only sold bicycles but also serviced them with care and expertise.

Little did the city know, it was witnessing the genesis of a remarkable legacy. Four years later, in 1974, Al’s fervor for cycling blossomed into The Bike Gallery—a sanctuary nestled in the heart of Dilworth, an iconic neighborhood steeped in Charlotte’s history.

Al’s dedication stretched beyond the confines of his shop. His commitment wasn’t just to the business; it was a reflection of his deep connection to the essence of cycling—a lifestyle he embraced wholeheartedly. With a sincere dedication to his craft, he assumed the role of a prominent advocate for cycling within the Charlotte community.

Through his contributions to The Charlotte News, he shared captivating narratives that not only informed but also inspired readers, fostering a deep appreciation for the cycling lifestyle and guiding many towards embracing it.

Over the passing years, Roland and Andres Lizarazo, Al’s sons, faithfully carried on their father’s legacy at The Bike Gallery. With steadfast dedication, they continued its role beyond a mere bike shop, transforming it into a vital community hub—a symbol of familial unity, a source of inspiration for all who share their love of cycling, and the unwavering commitment as the legacy perseveres into the third generation, with Al’s grandson Christian Lizarazo. As we unite to honor fifty years of accomplishments, obstacles, and cherished memories, let us not simply recognize the passage of time, but also honor the visionary spirit of a man whose dreams ignited not only a family legacy but also a community bond that became integral to our own.

We eagerly anticipate serving the Charlotte community for another 50 years, fueled by your valued support and encouragement.
