National Bicycle Dealers Association Welcomes Three New Board Members

Irvine, CA – September 20, 2024 – The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) is excited to announce the election of three dynamic leaders to its Board of Directors: Shirley Gonzalos of Pedal the Peaks, Chelsea Kulp of Shore Brake Cyclery, and Paul Tobio of Ryder Bikes. Each brings a wealth of experience and a passion for strengthening specialty bicycle retailers and the cycling industry as a whole.

Since its founding in 1946, the NBDA has worked tirelessly to empower specialty bicycle retailers, the heart of the cycling industry, through education, research, communication, and advocacy. With a mission to strengthen these businesses, the NBDA believes that when bicycle retailers thrive, the entire industry and cycling community benefits.

Meet the New Board Members

Shirley Gonzalos – Pedal the Peaks, Durango, CO

Shirley Gonzalos is the co-owner of Pedal the Peaks in Durango, CO. With a background that spans owning and managing a family pawn shop and various business ventures, Shirley brings a strong foundation in business management and strategic decision-making to the NBDA Board. Her passion for cycling extends beyond her business, as she actively works with local policymakers in Durango to promote cycling safety and create safer communities. Shirley’s advocacy efforts make her a valuable addition to the NBDA’s efforts to advance cycling policies and infrastructure.

Chelsea Kulp – Shore Brake Cyclery, Brant Beach, NJ

Chelsea Kulp, co-owner of Shore Brake Cyclery, brings over 10 years of experience in customer communications, media relations, and community outreach. As an advocate for inclusive cycling in her local community, Chelsea is eager to leverage her strategic communication skills to support the NBDA’s mission.

“I am thrilled to join the board of the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) and bring my expertise in communications and engagement strategy to support its mission,” said Chelsea Kulp. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members and association staff to help advance the goals of the NBDA, foster stronger connections within the cycling community, and promote inclusivity and growth in the industry.”

Paul Tobio – Ryder Bikes, Bradenton, FL

Paul Tobio has been at the forefront of the cycling industry for over two decades, with the last 17 years as the owner of Ryder Bikes. His experience in both the cycling industry and corporate sectors, including 17 years at Staples, has equipped him with extensive knowledge in operations, supply chain management, and strategic planning. Paul’s dedication to improving the cycling retail business is evident through his active participation in the NBDA P2 program.

Paul shared his excitement, saying, “Since joining the NBDA P2 program in 2023, I’ve collaborated with fellow independent bicycle dealer owners to share insights and strengthen business practices. I look forward to continuing that engagement and contributing to the success of our community.” Paul also presented at the 2024 NBDA Retailer Summit, offering valuable strategies on sales and margin growth for sustainable business success.

About the NBDA

The National Bicycle Dealers Association exists to support the specialty bicycle retailer. Through a combination of education, research, communication, and advocacy, the NBDA works to enhance retailers’ profitability and promote a passion for cycling. The NBDA is a non-profit organization supported by its membership of retailers and industry partners, and is led by President Heather Mason, who has been at the helm since 2021. Guided by a rotating Board of Directors, the association represents over 1,000 members across North America.

The NBDA provides essential resources, such as webinars, research reports, and advocacy programs, to help retailers stay competitive and informed. Members also benefit from initiatives like the Supplier Reduction Program and educational content that addresses industry challenges like profitability and inventory management.
